Box Modeling: Skull

I'm having a really tough time with Maya. I'm very new to this program, so it's taking me a while to understand the basic functions. What I'm trying to figure out is how to model my skull look like a skull. But it's not turning out so well. I adjusted the box model to get a similar shape as my reference image. But sometimes when I select the vertexes on the skull, I accidentally select my ref. image too. So it's a problem going back and forth when editing my skull. I'm also trying to undo the edits made onto the ref. My model was also having an issue of not having enough vertexes. I forgot what it was called, but, I needed the lines to loop around the shape. I spent awhile trying to add and remove some vertexes. It's a little confusing. Hopefully, when I get all this settled. I can easily morph the shape into a skull. It's incomplete for now.

I've noticed that there was this indent in the corner of the face. I don't know how to solve this. I've tried adding and removing vertexes/edges to fix the problem. But it won't go away or pop back out.

I've found more issues with the vertexes and tried fixing the issue by adding and removing edges/vertexes. I had also lost my reference photo. So I had to relocate the same img and upload it to the texture file.
Good news is that I've remembered some stuff from class. I could turn my ref image visibility off and on by typing it onto the channel menu. If I needed to locate an invisible item, I could go to windows and then outliner to find my missing object. I then select the object and go to the channel option to type down on for visibility. I still could not add in an eye socket or nose bone yet. I've made attempts but they were not successful. In the end, I only added another loop around the box model and left it as it is. Making a skull on Maya is super difficult.

Struggling with my skull model and could not progress any further. So far, I could only adjust the vertexes to match my reference image as best as I could.

Some things I've learned in class. I don’t want an "in gone" (?) which have more than 4 vertexes.
Triangles and polygons are ok as long as they have 4 vertexes? These were the notes I wrote down.
I tried changing the surface color to blue. This was to help solve the irregular vertexes that keep appearing on my box model. It took an hour to untangle the mess. It was a difficult puzzle to solve to be honest. I'm still struggling with the vertexes, but it is getting closer to being a skull shape. Also had to cut the skull in half to make it easier to do the job. This time it'll make the shape symmetrical. Also still trying to figure out how to make the eye sockets and insert the nose bone. Haven't gotten the slightest clue in dong that. But I won't give up.
