Hand Modeling #2
File under: hand_modeling2

I tried to make a new 3D hand model but I've forgotten how to do it.

This time I used a tutorial video I found on YouTube to help me re-trace my steps and see where I made the mistake on the previous attempt. I made a cube, but I was having a lot of trouble trying to get the right amount of divisions. I say this because I would input the number onto the sub-divisions box and the cube would always collapse in on itself every time I try it out. It was very confusing and frustrating. I tried both the subdivision boxes for width and height and they produced the same result: A strange polygon. I thought I had solved the problem after many trials and error, but I could only split the divisions into four even cubes rather than four rectangular divisions that I needed (to extrude the fingers). After toggling around Maya for a good hour I took a different approach. I would make the cube but not adjust the size and shape yet. I go to the name of the cube and input four into the subdivision box and adjust the size from there. Now that I have the size and amount of divisions I wanted on this cube, I could finally progress. The video did a bad job in showing the processes in using Maya. It mainly explained the steps on building the hand rather than the technical steps I needed to progress. For example, a box would appear and I had no idea how he did that because he didn't explained how to get the box to appear.

Ok, so I've figured out how to make the divisions. The next step was to get the fingers. That was easy. What I had problem with was adjusting the vertex points. The guy made it look super easy when he selected the vertexes and moved them around. I tried replicating it and failed miserably. The vertexes would not align properly, so I had to manually align them. What that would look like is one finger would appear normal and flat while the other one is misshapen and oddly pointy. So adjusting them took awhile. I've also added the thumb by following the tutorial. The tutorial showed a good way in forming the thumb so that it bends correctly. I had to do a lot of guess work on the first hand I made. So I'm glad that there was a better way to do this.

Stepping back a little bit, I had to form the palm first before getting to the fingers. There was a lot of going back and forth here by mistake. Forming the palm was easier than the fingers. I didn't know that I could easily shape the palm by selecting the surfaces on face mode and move them around and go back to vertex mode and do the same thing there too. I probably got the shape I wanted in less than 10 minutes, which was quick. The fingers however took longer and I didn't manage to finish them yet. They are still incomplete right now. But so far, I've successfully made a new hand model that is close to being finished! They just need some tweaking. The video also did a good job in separating the fingers (especially with the middle finger and the ring finger).

I'll attach the video below since it's really cool how he does the process. It's also very close to what we were doing the class regarding to process.
