Before you begin, you should check to make sure your project is set up with centimeters as units. Windows>Settings/Preferences>Preferences. In the menu that appears, click "settings" and look at working units.
1. In Photoshop, determine the measurements of your reference in centimeters: Image>Image Size>change the dropdown from pixels or inches to centimeters. Write down those measurements.
2. In Maya, make a plane by clicking the plane symbol on the polygon shelf or Create>Polygon Primitives>Plane
3. In the Channel Box (click the vertical Channel box tab on the right hand side of the screen if it isn't visible) change the Scale X and Scale Z to the height and width you wrote down.
Your plane should now be the correct dimensions.
4. Right click your plane and select "Assign New Material" from the dropdown menu
5. Select "lambert" from the materials menu.
6. The Attribute Editor should now pop up on the right hand side of the screen. There are tabs horizontal on the top of the Attribute Editor. Select the "lambert2" tab.
7. In the lambert2 tab under "common material attributes" you should see Color. To the right of Color there is a checkerboard button, click it.
8. In the menu that pops up, select "file." The Attribute Editor will pop up again.
9. In the Attribute Editor you should see a button shaped like a file folder. Click it.
10. Select your reference image from its location on the computer and click "Open"
Your image is now on the plane. If you don't see it, press 6 which displays textures.
