Building a Hand from blocks on Maya

The first day of class was kind of overwhelming, but very interesting. I learned how to start using Maya and utilize the different tools that came with the software. It was very intimidating at first (it still kind of is) because the software has so many tools and options, and sub-options, and modes, and professional features that I am just barely beginning to learn. We tried to make a hand out of "block"like shapes, beginning with a square on a 3-dimensional adjustable grid, and using the different option keys and in-software commands to draw out the figures into hand-like objects. I didn't feel I was doing that well, but some of the people next to me seemed to be struggling a little bit too and that made me feel better. The videos were really interesting; I liked the one about the 3-d animation process because it was so in-depth, that I'd never really thought about the work it took to make an animation before. The comparisons between the 2-d and 3-d animation styles was good also; it gave me an idea of how diverse the animation and cartoon drawing industry can be. Then after that we went back to Maya, and tried to finish our hand-- my hand looked vaguely like a mitten, because I'd started with the thumb and tried to work with the fingers from there. We never really finished our project, and I'm hoping to finish mine before next week.
